Valentine Special:

I have spent most of my day today arguing with many of my friends about how unnecessary it is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on flower in one day. First of my reasons is the commercialisation of the date, and then the most important one is the varied opinion about the origin of Valentine’s Day.

What I knew about this so far did not make much sense to me, so I decided to do some research about it… but it only made my belief stronger that Valentine is more of a myth than an actual occurrence in the history of mankind. Many of you will be surprised to know that there have actually been three Saints by the name “Saint Valentine”. And what is more important in this respect is that all three of these were martyrs.

Even if I somehow convinced myself that the story of Saint Valentine was true, I still know that it had nothing to do with India or the Indian Culture. Some theories about the origin of Valentine’s Day actually go totally against the Indian Culture.

It does not matter which theory about this day I believe in and which one I don’t, but what matters is that there is no way a sensible person would think that spending three hundred million dollars on flowers in one day is right.

Someone who has seen real poverty, where people don’t get one meal a day, will not think about flowers on this day.

It is funny how my Indian friends are so excited about the Valentine’s Day. The funny thing is that Indians just need something western to celebrate. They call it being modern. I can’t say this enough, that being modern and being western are two different things. You don’t have to let your own culture go and be westernised to be modern.

I’ve been told that Valentine’s Day is a day to do something special for your partner. Buy them flowers and gifts and so on. My point is that if your partners had to be treated in a super special way on this one day, then what about the rest of the year? Am I allowed to mistreat my partner the whole year and make up for it all with a bunch of flowers?

O well, I can keep going on and on about this. You decided what you would like to do this Valentine….!

The latest comment about my stupidity is actually a question on my understanding of the word Stupidity. This is what my royal friend Sonia Walia had to say about it all…:

HAHAHA!!!! and you tell me that I am stupid. Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that leaving the door unlocked and forgetting your shoes is not exactly classified as stupidity. These occurrences are considered more to be signs of forgetfulness or absentminded, wouldn't you say?

Now Sonia, I totally agree with you. My actions (or lack of actions) is generally characterised as "forgetfulness". But just tell me that who would be stupid enough to forget something like this...?

If that is not good enough an argument to prove my point, then check this out:

How many of you have been fined for the "signs of forgetfulness" (as Sonia puts it)...? I can think of only a few. Now here's a classic example:

My forgetfulness has cost me more than $100 today. I'll put the story very briefly: I was to leave my car for about two minutes. I came out of the car, locked the door, and totally forgot that I have locked the car (and my house keys, and my wallet) in the car. So I went to get the house keys from my brother and got the spare keys from home (the taxi cost me $40). When I got back to my car, I found a parking ticket waiting for me ($66).

Now Sonia, if that still sounds like "signs of forgetfulness", then wait for the last part:

It would have saved me all that trouble and the money if I had called the road service (my vehicle is covered for that). But that didn't occur to me... did it?

Now see what you have done Sonia... I must be the only person in the world who's trying to prove that I AM STUPID...!

I really am stupid…: It's official now…!

I haven't been writing much on here for the last few days because I have been busy reading the comments I have received in response to my last post. Now just like everything else in my life, this has a comical side to it. If you notice, I ask my readers for comments about everything I write on here. But I hardly ever get a comment about them. But I have been getting loads of comments about the last post. I wonder why every one has been so eager to certify that I AM STUPID.

Here are some of the comments I've been getting:

1. Yes u r very stupid........u r hearing from me so it is true!....lol.....So believe it!
2. Dun worry it not a bad thing........we all r stupid sometimes....but seriously u kill stupidity…!
3. God… can't believe it has taken you 24 years to realise that you are stupid…!
4. hehe… you rule stupidity.
5. Since it is official now, I hope you will not mind if I call you by the name that suits you the most… Stooopid…!

Woffff….. what reputation I have won after the ordeal of 24 years…!
No further comments on this matter please....!

Another Dilemma...:

I am in another dilemma today. This time it is about my own stupidity. I am wondering if I really am stupid, or I am growing more and more stupid just so that you people can have something interesting to read…! I thought leaving home for work without my work shoes on was stupid… but check this out…: yesterday, I left for work in the morning with my brother and left the front door of the house OPEN.

God Help Me.... .... .... .... .... Please...!

My car is away getting fixed due to that catastrophe that took place a few days ago. They gave me a courtesy car. And guess what they gave me…? A Yellow Hyundai Accent. Now that was the last car on my mind. A Hyundai Accent in yellow...? God.. they could have given me a white "Maruti Suzuki 800" instead(those of you who haven't heard of this car probably haven't seen Indian roads well enough...!). I thought my 1991 Mitsubishi Lancer was bad… but this is worst. But anyway, I guess I'll have to put up with it until the 10th. Yes… my car is going to be back on 10th.

Hey fellows… I have something interesting to report today. What do you think about a car smashing into another from behind at the speed of approximately 70 Ks an hour? Well okay okay… before any of you starts with how I should drive carefully and all… let me tell you that I was the one who was hit from behind. So it was not my fault. Hmm… anyway, now that I have your attention, let me give you a chronological count of the events:

1. At about 1730 hrs, I decided to go ‘n see off a friend who was leaving for India.

2. At about 1930hrs, we left for the airport in two separate cars.

3. At 1940hrs, we decided to stop at this other friend’s place for a cup of tea (his place happens to be half way to the airport). He turned into the apartment building and I stopped in the middle of the road to turn right… and 2 or 3 seconds later, my car is hit from behind by this idiot going at at-least 70 Ks an hour (it was a 60 k/h zone). We exchanged details with the driver of the other car and went on our way to the cup of tea which necessitated this stop.

4. At 2000 hrs, we left for the airport again.

Now tell me, did any one of you had a more eventful day?

Right now I’m sitting here looking at this voucher for six free bottles of beers which Big Brother received when he bought this CD player for one of our cars last week. I’m in a bit of dilemma about it. The dilemma is that I don’t really drink these days (not much… and not very often at all). So I’m wondering what I should do with this voucher. On one hand I think I should give it away, but then my wicked mind says that will be too much of a charity… hehe…! (Sonia... I bet you have a suggestion for me...) But anyway… I guess I’ll just keep it. I’m sure it’ll find its use and its user.

I am trying to find a good English Grammar Book right now. Any suggestions…? The reason why I need the grammar is that I want know why am I using the word “would” all the time and hardly ever use the words “will” and “shall”. “Will” and “Shall” seem to have fled the country due to the lingual pressure that “would” is creating. Well that was only an example. The point was that I wish to know why am I leaning more and more towards the street language day by day and distancing myself from the elegant English that I once used to know a little bit of. So if any of you have any suggestion about which grammar book should I buy, please drop me an e-mail.
